Grade 2
Instructor: Mrs. Hinrichs
Our goal in reading is for every student to become a stronger reader, regardless of where they are starting at the beginning of the year.  The best way to become a better reader is to read, read, read.  We take all the skills learned in previous grades and build on them.  We work on strategies to improve understanding of what is read. We want your child to be a reader who understands and relates to what they are reading, and to read for the love of reading.

Working With Words is the phonics/spelling portion of our language arts curriculum.  We continue to work on words already presented in first grade as well as adding more words for second graders.  We spend a lot of time learning how to use the chunks or patterns of words to spell other words.

We do writing everyday.  We want your second grader to see them self as a writer who can write interesting stories that have a beginning, middle, and end.  We spend much of our time working on personnel narratives, as that is the writing genre assessed in 4th grade.  We will experiment with other forms of writing as well.  This year we are pen pals with another second grade class at a school in Hastings to get even more real life writing practice.

Math is a continuation of the Saxon math program.  It is a fast-paced program that presents many varied math topics in a repeated cycle.  We cover many math topics, including: telling time, money, facts, word problems, fractions, graphs, geometry, number sense, and more.  Math consists of a math meeting, fact practice, lesson and guided practice.  There is homework on most days with the exception of Friday or the last day of the week.

Social studies and Science are also included in the curriculum.  Social studies topics include: culture, family heritage, Native American People, and our country and its symbols.  Science topics include: plants, push/pull, the solar system, and more.

Second Grade Poetry Academy
As second graders our goal is to become fluent readers (reading smoothly with expression). To help accomplish this goal, we need your help.  Each week the second graders will be given one or two new poems. The poems will be introduced, read, and discussed with the classroom teacher every Wednesday.  After the poems have been introduced, they will practice reading the poems with a partner. The next step will be for your child to read the poem out loud to at least five adults. (They may read to more if they choose.) After your child has read the poem(s) to the adult, the adult will need to sign and date the back of each poem. Then your child needs to return the 3-ring binder with the signed poems back to school by the following Tuesday to receive their new poems.
